Welcome to St. George Island, Florida
Located just off North Florida's Gulf Coast, St. George Island is one of the last inhabited yet unspoiled barrier islands in Florida – a serene and pet-friendly vacation paradise. The island is known for being quiet and tranquil due to its small size. Many occupants of the island rent out their homes during the spring and summer months.
St. George Island is a dream destination for nature lovers. With miles of uncrowded expanses for sunning and shelling, clear Gulf waters for swimming and fishing, and pristine marshes for wildlife viewing, St. George Island is considered one of the top beaches in the United States.
Unlike other parts of the Panhandle that have attracted large crowds and national attention, St. George remains a gem of the Forgotten Coast, perfectly suited for a low-key escape.
St. George Island State Park occupies the eastern nine miles of the island. Miles of white-sanded, undeveloped beaches provide the perfect setting to watch the sun sink in the sky. St. George Island is one of the only pet friendly Beaches in Florida. Pets are allowed in the campground, the nature trails, and on the paved surfaces throughout the park, but must be on a six-foot leash and under control of the owner. Pets are not allowed on the park beach but are allowed on the public beaches outside the parks boundaries. Many fishing reservations are also available in the area. The park has a series of hiking trails, boardwalks and observation platforms.
St. George Island is a known nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles. They come to the beach to lay their eggs between the months of May and October. Bird watching is a popular activity on St. George Island. You might encounter one of the many migratory birds that use St. George Island as a stopover on their journey. There have even been rare appearances by a flamingo and a snowy owl.
The island is also home to a number of events, including the annual Chili Charity Cook-Off each March.
One of the best ways to sightsee on St. George Island is to do it on the water! Kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding are all favorite hobbies around town. You'll have no problem finding beach equipment at these fantastic rental places.
