It is a principal city of the Crestview–Fort Walton Beach–Destin, Florida, metropolitan area. Destin is named after Leonard Destin, a New London, Connecticut fishing captain who settled in the area between 1845 and 1850. He built a New England colonial home at the location of the Moreno Point military reservation. Captain Destin and his descendants fished the area for decades.

If you’re looking for the best place to take your boat out in Destin, you should go to Crab Island. Its name is a misnomer, as erosion has altered its identity from being an island to being a sandbar that sits underwater. However, you don’t need to get your snorkel to check out Crab Island. It can actually only be reached via boat. The Crab Island experience is one of the most distinct ones in all of Destin, Florida. There are tons of “floating” attractions, including places to eat and obstacle courses.
